Camping with your canine companion is a great way to experience nature and spend time outdoors. However, there are some precautions that should be taken before going camping so you both stay safe while enjoying this bonding activity together!

Gear up for your camping trip with these helpful tips from Paws 2 Purrfection:

Preparation:

Preparedness is easily the most crucial part of any event, but this is even more true when planning a camping trip. There are several things to consider before heading out on your big adventure with your furry friend.

  • Identify dog-friendly campgrounds while your trip is still in the planning stages.
  • Think ahead about the possible dangers in the area. Are there dangerous water currents? Bears or snakes? Steep cliffs? Long stretches of trail with no access to water? Come with plans for any risky situations.
  • Plan and pack the essentials that you and your dog will need, while trying to anticipate the unexpected things that may come up.

Gear:

  • Outdoor Horizon provides a list of essential gear to pack when camping with your dog.
  • A first aid kit for your dog will be different from the one for humans. Dogtime suggests you include these 13 items, and you can find product reviews from veterinarians here.
  • Consider the pros and cons of leashes and harnesses, and decide which will be best for your dog on the trip. It might be good to bring both.

Health:

  • I Heart Dogs provides a list of 12 dog camping safety tips.
  • You can eliminate many potential hazards by being prepared. This includes having an emergency plan.
  • Learn how to check for ticks and remove them safely.
  • It’s important to know the signs of heat stroke in dogs, and be prepared to treat it.

Have Fun, BUT Safety First!

Now that you know how to keep your dog safe, you can let their wild animal roar! Well, at least take them on your next camping trip… Imagine how much fun they’ll have hiking, swimming, kayaking, fishing or whatever you do for fun. They’ll love curling up next to the campfire with you, too. At the end of the day, who wouldn’t want their best buddy by their side, next to a warm campfire and sleeping under the stars?
