Here’s What You Need to Know About Caring for Senior Pets

Caring for an older dog or cat is vastly different than taking care of a puppy or kitten. Older pets experience health problems similar to those faced by senior humans. Here’s the problem: They can’t tell you what’s wrong, although there are signs that might clue you in. Before problems even arise, however, get yourself acquainted with ways to best take care of an older pet. This may involve lifestyle changes or simply visiting your veterinarian more often.

Here are a few things to think about as your pet begins to age out of their youth.

Older Animals Tends to Slow Down and Gain Weight

Dogs (and cats) in the United States are often well overweight — and even a fit animal will slow down as they get older. Jessica Vogelsang, DVM, asserts that as their activity level changes, so do their nutritional needs. Talk to your vet about changing their diet so they aren’t consuming more calories than they burn. A higher quality of food may also give them more protein and vitamins, and it will often be easier to digest.

Stress on the Joints Is Painful

Added weight (combined with weaker muscles and stiff joints) can leave your pet in pain. And pain can make even the most friendly family pet irritable. Your vet can advise you of supplements that can ease systemic pain and inflammation. Also, ask your vet about the benefits of CBD oil if they don’t suggest it right off. While relatively new, there’s a ton of promising research that indicates that this non-psychoactive cannabis extract can provide some much-needed relief. Further, CBD is thought to help with anxiety and skin issues. Remedy Review’s recent buyer’s guide offers more insight and highlights the top 10 CBD oils.

Exercise Is Essential Regardless of Age

A healthy body can give your dog or cat their best chances of fighting off infection or suffering from the negative side effects of age. Exercise also assists with weight loss and maintenance and improves flexibility and joint function. Acclaimed dog training expert Cesar Millan recommends swimming since it’s a low-impact activity.

Rearrange Your Home to Accommodate an Aging Pet

In addition to weight gain and muscle issues, older pets may suffer from declining eyesight, hearing difficulties, bladder control problems, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Look for ways that you can make their home life more comfortable. Declutter rooms where your dog is likely to be, especially at night. Remove obstructions such as shoes, toys, and unnecessary furniture. An orthopedic bed and pet stairs are also useful. Expect that they may have accidents and avoid the temptation to scold them for relieving themselves indoors. Instead of getting frustrated, invest in a good carpet cleaner and deodorizer to help solve these problems as they arise.

Early Detection Can Improve Their Quality of Life

Although more than one-third of all pets in the United States are over the age of seven, only a fraction of these pets receives routine veterinary care. However, routine care is exponentially important as your dog ages. A geriatric screening can identify issues such as increased thirst and respiratory distress that an owner may attribute to less serious issues. A regular physical exam, which should include a blood and urine analysis, can help you pinpoint problems that can affect your dog or cat negatively, and give you time to fix it.

Your pet is a lifelong companion, one that requires your love and care throughout their entire life. And no matter how old they are, they will remain faithful to you until the end.

You owe it to your pet to tend to them during their golden years.
