Selecting a pet is no small decision. The animal you choose will share your home and your lifestyle, and it’s a hefty commitment as some pets live well over a decade. Making the right choice will keep you both happy for years to come.

Cat or dog?

Deciding what kind of pet will make a great addition to your home depends on what your lifestyle is like. Most people choose cats or dogs, but as Purina points out the two animals tend to be very different. Generally speaking, cats require less indoor space, are quieter, and are more independent than dogs. Most cats are affectionate, entertaining, and relatively self-sufficient pets. Dogs, on the other hand, tend to be more active and require more interaction from their owners. They are typically more protective of their owners, need and enjoy more time playing together, and need some basic, routine grooming. If you work long hours and aren’t able to take a dog for potty trips, a cat may be a better choice for you. However if you have allergies to cats or cringe when you think about litter boxes, you may be better off with a dog. If you’re still up in the air on whether a cat or dog is right for you, one idea is to pet sit for family members or friends with each species to see what feels like a good fit.

Selecting a breed

Dogs and cats not only vary greatly from one another. To complicate things even more, each breed offers certain general characteristics. For instance, while they are both called “terriers,” the Boston Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier are very different dogs. In fact, BarkPost ranked Boston Terriers among the 10 most lazy breeds, since they can usually expend their energy with a quick, daily walk. The American Staffordshire Terrier, on the other hand, made the American Kennel Club’s list of the top ten most athletic dogs, since they make great workout partners and enjoy active pastimes like agility and tracking. Things get even more complicated if you’re considering a mixed breed. You’ll want to weigh everything, like how large your yard is, what you want to do with your new pet, and how big your budget is for your pet’s needs. Do some research before committing to an animal, and check in with whomever handles the pet on a daily basis to see if the pet you’re considering will be a good fit.

Before “gotcha day”

Once you find “the one,” you’ll be excited to bring home your new family member. However, it’s important to get your home ready for the new arrival. Purchase your pet’s basics well in advance, such as bowls, food, toys, a leash, collar, grooming tools, and so on. A dog will enjoy a big, comfortable, well-made bed, or your cat may enjoy a scratching post. Also be sure to pet-proof your home so it’s free of hazards.

Upon arrival

When the big day finally arrives, ensure your pet’s transition is smooth by planning on at least a few days of quiet and calm.Understand there may be accidents while your pet adjusts to the new environment and routine, even if he is already housebroken. Some experts note it can take several weeks for your pet’s personality to shine through. Understand that animals coming from shelters or rescues can be fearful or nervous initially and may take longer to adjust. Provide structure and a steady schedule because it will help your animal feel secure and help you bond, and pay attention to the signals your pet sends. Some animals need some space while adjusting, and others want attention or exercise.Be patient and give your pet a chance to get acclimated, and soon you’ll both be comfortable companions.

Your perfect pet. Adding an animal to your home and life is a big decision. With thoughtful evaluations, you can make a great choice. Your furry family member and you will be the best of friends in no time!
